Product Specifications

  • Botanical name: Zamia furfuracea
  • Placement: Indoor (bright light) or a partly sunny balcony/patio
  • Care level: Easy (once established)
  • Light: Bright light with several hours of direct sun; tolerates medium indoor light
  • Temperature: 15-32Β°C ideal range; some cold tolerance once established
  • Pet safety: EXTREMELY toxic to pets, especially dogs - all parts contain cycasin, but the seeds are most concentrated. Can cause liver failure and can be fatal even in small amounts. This is one of the most dangerous common houseplants for pets - keep well out of reach.

A striking cycad (not a true palm, despite the name) with thick, leathery, stiff fronds and a slow, sculptural growth habit. Native to Mexico and known for being genuinely low-maintenance once established.

  • Humidity: Tolerates average to low humidity
  • Fertilizer: Light balanced feeding 1-2 times during the growing season

FAQs

Is Cardboard Palm actually a palm?
No β€” despite the name and palm-like look, it's a cycad, a much older type of plant unrelated to true palms.

Is it safe to have around pets?
No. Cardboard Palm is EXTREMELY toxic to pets, especially dogs β€” every part contains cycasin, with the seeds being the most concentrated and dangerous. It can cause liver failure and can be fatal even in small amounts. This is one of the most dangerous common houseplants for pets, and it should be kept well out of reach at all times.

How much water does it need?
Very little β€” let the soil dry out between waterings. It's drought-tolerant and prone to root rot if kept consistently wet.

How fast does it grow?
Slowly β€” it develops a stout base (caudex) over years and rarely needs repotting.
