Product Specifications

  • Botanical name: Asparagus setaceus (syn. Asparagus plumosus)
  • Placement: Indoor (also suits shaded outdoor spots)
  • Care level: Easy
  • Light: Bright, indirect light; tolerates partial shade
  • Temperature: 15-24°C typical indoor range; protect from cold drafts
  • Pet safety: Berries can cause mild GI upset and skin irritation if handled/ingested - the fern fronds themselves are lower risk but keep berries away from pets.

Fern Asparagus is grown for its ultra-fine, feathery fronds that give a soft, lacy look. Not a true fern, it belongs to the Asparagaceae family and is a long-standing favourite for both floristry greenery and houseplant collections.

Instructions

  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist; ensure good drainage
  • Light: Bright, indirect light; tolerates partial shade
  • Soil: Well-draining, organically rich potting mix.
  • Humidity: Moderate to high - dry indoor air can cause frond yellowing or drop
  • Fertilizer: Balanced liquid fertilizer during the growing season.
  • Repotting: Every couple of years, or once root-bound
  • Pruning: Trim dead or yellowing stems at the base to keep growth tidy

FAQs

Is this the same as the thicker Foxtail Fern?
No - Asparagus Plumosus (setaceus) has much finer, feathery fronds than the thicker-cladode Foxtail/Sprenger fern (Asparagus densiflorus); they are related but visually distinct species.

Is it safe for pets?
The fronds themselves are lower risk, but any berries the plant produces can cause mild GI upset or skin irritation if handled or ingested - keep berries away from pets.

Does it need high humidity?
It does best with moderate to high humidity; dry indoor air can cause the fine fronds to yellow or drop.

Can I trim it back?
Yes - trim dead or yellowing stems at the base; wear gloves, as stems carry small thorny spurs beneath the soft foliage.
